3D Model SampleMakai offers sophisticated products that work together to greatly improve the accuracy and reliability with which submarine cables are laid.  We provide:

  • Systems to plan cable installations.

  • Systems to monitor and control in real-time the installation of a cable or cable system.

  • Systems to analyze in detail the installation of a submarine cable.

The heart of Makai's cable software is a powerful 3-D cable model. This fast, finite-segment dynamic model was developed by Makai specifically for precise real-time cable laying control. Having been used successfully prior to and during numerous critical cable lays, our algorithms have proven to be both reliable and practical.

All significant factors influencing the position and control of the cable are included in these programs: full 3-D modeling, complex cables and shapes that change with time, either 3-D or 2-D bottom terrain and complete current profiles. Numerous cable types and cable bodies can be incorporated into a single cable lay or recovery. These programs are suitable for all ocean depths and cable laying speeds.

3-D shows how a turn and cable type transition combine to create a dynamic event that effects the as-laid cable condition.

Software Suite:
Initially designed in a UNIX operating environment and operated on HP workstations as the Integrated Control System (ICS) and Cable Lay Monitor (CLM), Makai has evolved the software to a Windows, PC-based system. This new suite of cable management software includes:

MakaiPlan

To plan and optimize cable routes & assemblies

Software to create submarine cable routes, define cables and in-line bodies, edit routes, define and adjust slack, instantly create an RPL and SLD and  estimate costs.  Provides common data formats which can be sent over the Internet.

MakaiPlanPro

To plan, optimize and simulate cable installations
In addition to the cable planning tasks associated with MakaiPlan, MakaiPlan Pro allows the user to perform powerful and precise 3-D, dynamic simulations of a submarine cable installation.  The simulation provided by MakaiPlan Pro gives a detailed understanding of cable behavior, can be used for training cable engineers, can be used for pre-lay and post-lay analysis, and can be used to create a detailed Ship Plan for installation.

MakaiLay

Cable lay system for real-time monitoring of the cable during the lay
3-D dynamic modeling of the cable in suspension to provide accurate cable touchdown positions and bottom slack or bottom cable tension and  provide instructions to the cable ship for following the designated Ship Plan. Able to  simulate the installation and control of single marine communication cables before or after an actual lay. Can  read a wide range of digital input data.

MakaiDTM

Digital Terrain Module (DTM) module for MakaiPlan™ & MakaiPlan Pro™.

Added module to accurately process and visualize in 2D and 3D the large amounts of point data collected along an entire survey area.  Colored shaded relief images in conjunction with detailed color contour maps can be created, automatically geo-referenced and incorporated in the overall GIS database to further facilitate the selection of the optimum cable route.

MakaiSpan

MakaiSpan module for MakaiPlan™ & MakaiPlan Pro™.

Cable and pipeline span analysis software to compute, in near real-time, a true and accurate representation of the pipe/cable shape on the bottom, including the free spans, the induced shear and moments along the pipe/cable as well as the bend radii and reaction forces at the bottom contact points.

Autoslack

Added module for MakaiLay  to control bottom slack

Allows the at-sea monitoring system to automatically control bottom slack by controlling cable payout rate.

Qualifications:
Makai's cable lay control development started in 1987 with a US Department of Energy research program requiring submarine cable placement and control that was beyond the capabilities of conventional cable laying. That DOE cable was placed in 1900 meters of water with an average placement error of only 4.7 meters. Since that first highly successful application, the development and use of Makai's control system have been continuous. The reliability and robustness of the at-sea software has been demonstrated on many occasions and the accuracy validated through extensive post-lay surveys.
