Tabreed Bahrain

Acting as a subcontractor to FVB Energy of Minneapolis Minnesota, Makai was asked to provide design engineering services for a shallow water intake and discharge pipeline to supply warm seawater for a district cooling plant to service the Diplomatic Area of Manama, Bahrain.  The project sponsor was Tabreed Bahrain, a subsidiary of The National Central Cooling Co. (PJSC) – Tabreed of the United Arab Emirates. A 30,000 ton (105 MW thermal) district cooling plant is intend to provide lower cost and more environmentally friendly cooling for Bahrain World Trade Centre and other buildings within Manama. Warm seawater is brought in for use in cooling the condensers in the centralized chillers. The slightly warmed seawater is then discharged some distance away so as not to influence the intake water temperature.  This scheme saves energy, reduces potable water consumption and reduces carbon emissions. The project is currently under construction.
